THEOLOGY, SOCIETY AND CULTURE

This research strand aims to locate Cupitt’s work on non-realism, radical theology and solar ethics within the culture of the last half of the twentieth century.

It will consider how wider social and intellectual trends such as the decline of institutional and denominational Christianity, the expansion of higher education and the emergence of progressive or radical thinking in philosophy, theology and social theory might have contributed to the development of Cupitt’s own thinking.

How does Cupitt’s own non-realist philosophy relate to other forms of modern or post-modern non/belief, such as atheism, secular humanism, agnosticism, or those identifying as ‘spiritual but not religious’?
