THE FUTURE OF RADICAL THEOLOGIES

This thread will engage with scholarship that continues the trajectory of Cupitt’s intellectual legacy, enhancing understanding of his key ideas and the development of his thinking. It will stimulate debate about the future prospects

This research theme aims to explore the relevance of Don Cupitt’s ideas, their subsequent reception and continuing intellectual debate, for the continuing development of contemporary radical and progressive theologies in the twenty-first century.

Cupitt invited his readers to embrace a ‘non-realist’ religious ethic that might serve as a positive and humanitarian vision for the world. We will consider how movements such as the Sea of Faith Network have adopted and developed many of Cupitt’s ideas.

We will ask whether there is still a constituency for Cupitt’s brand of non-realist theology today and how people might encounter such ideas and express them in practice.
